IACHR NAMES JORGE TAIANA AS ITS SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE

Washington, D.C., September 10, 2010—The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expresses its satisfaction and appreciation to Jorge Taiana for accepting the proposal to be designated Special Representative for the Strengthening of the Inter-American Commission. The IACHR believes the appointment of the distinguished diplomat and professor marks an important step toward strengthening the inter-American system for the protection of human rights.

“It is truly an honor to be able to come back to collaborate with the IACHR and with the extraordinary work it does in the Americas,” Taiana said in accepting the honorary appointment. “I hope my contribution will help resolve the central challenge remaining for the IACHR, which is the lack of resources,” added Taiana, who served as Executive Secretary of the IACHR from 1996 to 2001 and Argentina’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2010.

As Special Representative, Jorge Taiana will work with the IACHR to strengthen it as an institution. For more than a decade, one of the main challenges facing the inter-American system has been the need for sufficient resources to carry out the mandates assigned to it by the member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS). The Special Representative will coordinate an initiative whose central purpose will be to strengthen the inter-American human rights system by obtaining the resources it needs to operate.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States, the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this matter. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in a personal capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
