REFORM OF THE IACHR RULES OF PROCEDURE

Washington, D.C., April 20, 2009 – The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has prepared a project for the reform of its rules of procedure, which is available on its Web site.

The Commission has invited the OAS Member States, civil society organizations and other experts to submit observations so that it may take their views into account during the final stage of review and approval of the proposed changes.

In order to submit the corresponding observations, please send an e-mail to: [email protected] and write “Observations regarding the proposal for the IACHR Rules of Procedure” as the subject of the message. The IACHR will receive observations until May 31, 2009.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has the mandate to promote respect for human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this matter. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who act in a personal capacity, without representing a particular country, and who are elected by the OAS General Assembly.
