At the invitation of the Government of Peru, in June 26 to 28, 2001, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will make a protocolary visit to that country. 

          The IACHR is an intergovernmental organ of the OAS, responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Hemisphere.  The seven members of the Commission are elected in their personal capacity  by the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) for a four-year period.  The Commission´s attributions are fundamentally based on the American Convention on Human Rights and the Charter of the OAS, instruments ratified by the Republic of Peru. 

          The Commission´s delegation will include Dean Claudio Grossman, President of the Commission; Dr. Hélio Bicudo, Commissioner and Rapporteur for Peru; Ambassador Jorge E. Taiana, Executive Secretary of the Commission; and Dr. Ignacio J. Alvarez, IACHR desk officer for peruvians matters. 

          During its visit to Peru, the Commission will interview various Peruvians officials and will express its acknowledgement of the people and current Government of Peru for their efforts in reestablishing democracy and the rule of law in that country.
