PRESS RELEASE

Nš 10/99

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has among its pending cases case No. 11.760 concerning the Constitutional Court. On 14 April 1999, the State of Peru requested an extension, from that date to 3 July 1999 inclusive, of the deadline for submitting the case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. The request has also been agreed to by the petitioners. Both parties requested the Commission to play, in keeping with its mandate, an active role in the process of achieving a friendly settlement. The Commission therefore decided yesterday to grant the extension requested and hopes that the case will be resolved within the additional period granted. The granting of this extension means that, if necessary, the deadline provided for in Article 51(1) of the American Convention on Human Rights for submitting the case to the Inter-American Court will be extended.
